Deviating from the norm

Devious Machines Infiltrator is a new multi effect that stacks and modulates up to 10 effects from a library of 28. Modulation sources include envelopes, LFOs, a sequencer. Glitch, stutter and filter modulation effects are easy to make in this one stop shop.

The main features include:

  • 28 Effects: 10 modules from a range of 28 effects can be stacked and modulated simultaneously. Effects include filters, distortion, pitch shifting, FM, delay and reverb.
  • Modulation: Modulators span fully flexible envelopes, a multi lane sequencer, LFOS. Audio and MIDI can be used to trigger and modulate effects. The 32 step sequencer can trigger up to 10 effects for every step.
  • Swing: The amount of swing can be added to add more than straight grooves to your LFO modulations.
  • Pitch Snapping: Tune effects, such as pitch shifters, by snapping them to musical notes.
  • Compressor & Overdrive: Add grit to your filters with overdrive, and squash audio signals with a limiter or multi brand compressor.
  • Macros: Control multiple effect parameters with 4 macro encoders, making more complex changes to effects easier to control live or via automation in your DAW.
  • 750 Presets: Devious Machines has worked with artists and sound designers to create a huge library of ready-made effect chains. Genres covered include Drum & Bass/ Dubstep, IDM, House, Psy/ Dub, Techno, Glitch Hop and Bass.

Our View

If you are into modulated and automated effects, Infiltrator* may be worth trying out with the 14 day demo. The concept reminds me of Cableguys Shaperbox*, which also stacks and modulates effects such as filters, distortion, imaging and volume, or the more specialised Izotope Stutteredit*.

I own and use Cableguys Shaperbox a lot, which is great as an modulated effect and as a volume shaper side chain. In contrast, Devious Machines Infiltrator* looks a bit more comprehensive with the sequencer and macros, and more effects on board. But the extra functionality looks to come at the cost of being more cluttered in the interface, and therefore perhaps a bit more complicated to use. I might try the demo myself and look to do a full review in the future.
