Baby Audio Grainferno Turns Any Audio Into a Granular Synthesizer
Baby Audio has released Grainferno, a granular synthesizer plugin for Mac and PC, available from 11 March 2026. Grainferno is the company's most technically ambitious instrument to date, built around a custom granular processing engine (a synthesis technique that slices audio into tiny fragments called grains, then rebuilds them as textures, atmospheres, or playable synth voices).
Dual-Source Morphing
Grainferno's central feature is its dual-source architecture: the plugin pulls grains from two independent audio files simultaneously and morphs between them in real time across seven blend modes. Baby Audio presents this as a tool for blending loops, samples, or full mix stems in ways that go beyond standard granular layering. A drag-and-drop modulation system handles parameter routing, keeping complex signal paths accessible without deep menu navigation.

Oscillator-Rate Grains
Where most granular instruments stay in texture territory, Grainferno can push grain generation fast enough to enter the audio-frequency range. At those speeds, grains stop behaving like textures and start acting like oscillators (signal generators producing periodic, pitched tones), converting any loaded audio file into a playable synth voice with the timbral character of the source baked in. Baby Audio calls this "tonal granulation," positioning Grainferno as a synthesis tool as much as a texture processor.
Per-Grain Processing
Three processing stages apply independently to each grain rather than to the summed output: a multimode filter, blur (a feedback mechanism that introduces overlapping grain trails), and compression (for consistent grain dynamics across highly dynamic source material). The approach draws on academic granular research, particularly Curtis Roads's work on per-grain signal processing, cited by developer Joel Keohane as a key influence.
Presets and Sample Library
Grainferno ships with 325 factory presets from Virtual Riot, dnksaus, and Francis Preve, plus 378 royalty-free samples totalling 1.5GB. Six quickstart templates are included alongside per-preset macro controls. An onboard effects section includes compressor, OTT, delay, reverse delay, reverb, shimmer reverb, chorus, and saturation, drawing on algorithms from Baby Audio's existing plugin catalogue.
Formats and Compatibility
Grainferno is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS 10.15 or above (Apple Silicon native) and Windows 10 and above. Priced at $79 at launch, rising to $129 MSRP. A free trial is available from the Baby Audio site.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Grainferno cost?
$79 at launch (intro pricing), rising to $129 MSRP. A free trial is available from Baby Audio.
What plugin formats does Grainferno support?
VST3, AU, and AAX on macOS 10.15 or later and Windows 10 or later. Apple Silicon native. A standalone version is also included for use outside a DAW.
How many morphing modes does Grainferno have?
Seven: including standard crossfade, 4-bit, 8-bit, randomisation, and follow modes, all applied at the grain level rather than at the mix output.
How does Grainferno compare to other granular instruments?
The closest dedicated granular instruments are NI Form ($99) and Logic Pro's built-in Alchemy synthesizer (free for Logic users, with a capable granular engine). Arturia Pigments ($199) includes a granular oscillator as one of four synthesis engines. Grainferno focuses exclusively on granular synthesis with dual-source morphing and per-grain processing not available in any of those instruments at this price.
How does Grainferno compare to granular effects plugins?
Granular effects like Output Portal ($149) process live audio input in real time; they are insert effects rather than instruments. Grainferno is a synthesizer: it loads audio files and plays them as MIDI-controllable voices. Different tools for different jobs.
Our View
Baby Audio has built a consistent track record across a broad range of plugin types; Tekno last year demonstrated they can execute on complex, synthesis-heavy tools. Granular is a crowded space, but mostly from the effects angle. The dedicated instrument competitors are NI Form ($99) and Arturia Pigments ($199), the latter with granular as one of four synthesis engines. Grainferno is the focused option, and at $79 intro it is the cheapest dedicated granular synthesizer currently available.
The dual-source morphing concept with seven blend modes is the right kind of differentiator: it moves the instrument away from single-sample exploration and towards something more compositionally useful. The per-grain compression is particularly interesting; compressing at the grain level before summing is fundamentally different from mix-bus compression, and could be valuable for dynamic source material. 325 presets and 1.5GB of samples suggests they want it to be immediately useful without requiring deep synthesis knowledge, which is a sensible commercial call for a $79 instrument.
Whether it sounds as interesting as it reads needs hands-on time.
