Zebra 3: Ground-Up Rebuild of a Cult Synth Arrives April 20

u-he has confirmed that Zebra 3 launches on April 20, 2026 -- the complete redesign of the modular synthesizer first released as Zebra 2 over two decades ago. Every algorithm, parameter, and workflow has been rewritten from scratch. u-he founder Urs Heckmann describes it as "like Photoshop for synthesis." Pre-order pricing of €179 is available until launch; existing Zebra 2 licence holders upgrade for €30.

New Oscillator Architecture

The headline addition is a spline-based wavetable oscillator (a wavetable engine that uses curved guide paths to define waveform shapes rather than interpolating between fixed snapshots), shipping with over 150 shaping and morphing tools. Alongside it sits a physical modelling oscillator focused on modal synthesis (simulating the resonance of struck objects such as marimbas and drums), and a vector synthesis module (a four-source mixer where a two-dimensional control path blends between sound sources in real time). All three oscillator types are new to Zebra; none carry over from Zebra 2.

Filters, Modulation, and Interface

Zebra 3 ships with over 48 filter types, with more planned post-launch. None of the Diva filters from ZebraHZ make it into Zebra 3; u-he has replaced them with new models sharing similar characteristics, confirmed directly by Urs Heckmann. The modulation system is entirely new; every module is patchable, with colour-coded routing that makes the signal architecture readable at a glance.

Presets, Compatibility, and CPU

Zebra 3 launches with over 1,200 factory presets. Zebra 2 presets are not compatible -- the internal architecture is too different. CPU usage is roughly double per module compared to Zebra 2, a trade-off u-he acknowledges directly. Format support covers VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP (Component Level Audio Plugin, an open-source format now supported across most major DAWs) on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The development thread and community discussion are on the official u-he KVR forum; the final beta download thread is on the KVR beta thread. Zebralette 3 -- u-he's free single-oscillator version of the Zebra engine -- is available now as a no-cost preview of Zebra 3's oscillator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Zebra 3 cost?
€179 at introductory pre-order pricing until April 20, 2026, rising to €249 at full price. Existing Zebra 2 licence holders upgrade for €30. Owners of both Zebra 2 and The Dark Zebra soundset upgrade for free. GBP and USD pricing not yet confirmed -- check the u-he store at launch.

Is Zebra 2 compatible with Zebra 3?
No. Zebra 2 presets will not load in Zebra 3. The internal architecture has been completely rewritten.

What formats does Zebra 3 support?
VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP on macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Is there a free trial of Zebra 3?
The public beta has been available free via the KVR Audio forum with a temporary licence card expiring July 2026. Post-launch trial availability not confirmed. Zebralette 3 is permanently free and uses the same oscillator engine.

How much more CPU does Zebra 3 use than Zebra 2?
Roughly double per module, according to u-he.

How does Zebra 3 compare to Serum or Massive X?
Zebra 3 has significantly deeper sound architecture -- more oscillator types, more filters, full modular routing -- at the cost of a steeper learning curve. Serum 2 ($199) and Massive X ($149) are faster to get results from. Phase Plant ($199) is the closest architectural rival.

Our View

Zebra 2's reputation was built over two decades of use in cinematic sound design -- Hans Zimmer used it extensively on The Dark Knight and Inception, and told MusicRadar that "90% of what I do is done on one software synth." That synth was Zebra 2. The question for Zebra 3 is whether it earns that same trust or just inherits the name. We haven't had hands-on time yet -- it goes to the top of the review queue the moment it ships.

What the beta makes clear is that this is not a feature update. The architecture is genuinely new. The spline-based wavetable approach is different from what Xfer Serum 2 does, and the physical modelling oscillator adds a dimension none of the direct competitors offer at this price. Closest rivals:

ProductPriceKey difference vs Zebra 3
Xfer Serum 2$199Faster workflow, industry standard, shallower architecture
Native Instruments Massive X$149Strong modulation, narrower oscillator range
Kilohearts Phase Plant$199 (or $9.99/mo subscribe-to-own)Closest architectural rival -- modular, different synthesis philosophy, no physical modelling
VitalFree (Basic) / $25 (Plus) / $80 (Pro)Spectral wavetable, much lower price, significantly less depth

The CPU cost is worth flagging -- roughly double per module versus Zebra 2. Dense patches on older hardware will suffer. For anyone else, Zebra 3 at €179 introductory is a serious offer for what looks like the deepest software synthesizer available at that price point.
